You must pass text as an argument in the textbf command. textbf, bfseries, and bf are the three default commands used in latex to convert text from normal to bold. These commands enable you to change the font itself to different styles. In that case, the normal text may need to be converted to bold font weight more than once for the beauty of the document. The following commands allow you to change the font size in LaTeX. I personally think there will be few usecases to manually adjust the settings of the font, because the environments usually do this job for you automatically, I just included this for completeness.
